1949 HUDSON COMMODORE SIX SEDAN

HISTORY

The Hudson Motor CarCompany was known for producing durable, well engineered but conservativelystyled automobiles. That reputation was to be forever changed on December 7th,1947 when Hudsonintroduced their new 1948 models in nationwide showings. Banners proclaimed “This Time It’s Hudson”.The cars won instant acclaim from the public. Production had actually begun onOctober 12th. The tremendous factory conversion effort took only 23days. Hudsonspent $16,000,000 for development and new production equipment. The new car wasrevolutionary in that virtually no parts interchanged with the 1947 models, except the eight cylinder engine, which was essentially the same. The car hadthe lowest center of gravity and the lowest roofline of any American carwithout sacrificing headroom, due to the floorpans being attached to the bottomof the frame members instead of the top as all previous American cars had been. While the 1941 Nash 600 had been the first production unibody car, the newHudson was significantly more rugged in construction and offered a sleek newdesign that was way ahead of the competition. The new body design was termed“Monobilt” because the body structure was of welded all steel construction. Thecars were available in Super and Commodore trim levels with either a Six orEight cylinder engine.

The 1949 Commodore SixSedan featured in this auction spent its life as a car in Sunny California. The options include Radio and Heater,Whitewall tires, a windshield visor, Oil bath air cleaner and factory Directionalsignals. There is a beautiful set of original keys. The original 262 engine hasbeen replaced with a 262 engine from a 1954 Hudson. The 1954 “Instantinduction” 262 is rated at 145 horsepower. Whoever did the engine swap knewwhat they were doing as it runs very strong and is a sanitary installation! Theengine is smooth and quiet, as are the gearboxes. It has standard shift withOverdrive and a 4 5/9 rear axle. The overdrive works correctly, including thekickdown feature. The current mileage is 95,460. I believe this to be theoriginal mileage. The mileage isexempted on the Indiana title in my name.
