Cadillac had the Eldorado andChrysler had the 300 and Ford had the two-place Thunderbird, but the best ofall was the 1956 Packard Caribbean. Itwas Packard’s last grand stand to try and capture enough of the market place tostay in business and they put all their bets and dollars on the 1956 PackardCaribbean convertible. It was a big carat just under 5,000 pounds but it was being pushed by 374 c.i. V8 engine with atrue 310 hp.! Back then the price tagwasn’t chump change it was $5,995.00 and to justify that kind of expense in1956, Packard even threw on their V8 engine with the two four-barrelcarburetors and a push button automatic transmission. The convertible interior feature for theinteriors was that the back rest and the seat cushions were reversible. One side of the seat cushions had leatheron one side had cloth. The clothmaterial would be considered more comfortable for hot days. With all this power, Packard even put in atwin traction differential with limited slip.
