DYNAMITE + CORNFIELD = HEMI

1966 Dodge Coronet 500

This car was originally purchased by John Cook (aka Cookie) from Elk Way Dodge in Sutton, West Virginia.

In 1980, a team of excavators used dynamite to clear some land. After an explosion, the excavators heard an unusual sound, which led them to search an adjacent cornfield. What they found was the very same 1966 Dodge Coronet buried deep in the cornfield!

The car was then purchased by the second owner of Knox, PA. circa 1980. He owned a repair shop that specialized in Chrysler's. I spoke with this previous owner late last year to confirm the car’s history, photos and originality. He confirmed that the engine and drive train is all original.

The car remained in his possession until 1985. He intended to restore the car, but he needed cash to finance a business expansion. So, he sold it to the third owner who began an extensive bare metal restoration in 2000. The floor plans were replaced along with both front and rear fenders. All other sheet metal and the bumpers are original to the car. NOS parts were used for the front grill and back tail light sections.

The original interior components include console, front seats which were re-covered and the original dash which has a crack in it, please see pictures. A new rear bench seat was sourced, new period correct carpeting and a new headliner was installed.

The engine was rebuilt to stock specifications. A new crankshaft and piston heads were used. The original rods were retained for the build. The engine has the original carburetors, intake manifold and heads. The cast date on the block located by the starter motor is 3-28-66. The block casting # is 2468330-01. The stamping date, located front drivers side in front of the intake manifold is 6-2 17. The car's build date is 7-14-66. The motor has approx. 1500 miles since rebuild. The car has been decoded by Galen Clover and also has a Production Record from Chrysler LLC.

The transmission is the original 727-B Torqueflite. The prop shaft and rear end are original to the car. The original build sheet was found by the third owner intact and complete behind the back seat. Suspension, front-end, body and engine bushings are all new. An Accurate exhaust system with H pipe is installed.

The car has had a recent tune-up and a Pertronix Ignitor III SS ignition kit was installed for better performance while maintaining the stock look. The car comes with a set of stock wheels and period correct Option 48 blue lined Coker tires. Documentation includes Galen Cover books, and original showroom catalog books, additional literature and receipts. I have contact information for the two previous owners. Several people have asked about the reserve. By way of example, Hagerty's valuation tool rates #1 Concourse condition at around $90K, and #2 Excellent at $78K. I would consider the condition of this car between # 1 & 2. My reserve is well below the #2 level.

Someone had asked about the originality/matching numbers for this car. Thanks again for your question. This car has been decoded by Galen Govier, and a Production Record from Chrysler, and the Certicard, these are all captured in the listings pictures. Please let me know if you are unable to view/locate these. For cars 1968 and later, the last for digits of the VIN would be stamped on the engine and trans. It's pretty straightforward to decode them. For 1966 & 1967 cars they did not employ this method. For these 'early' cars you need to establish originality by dates and stamped numbers, ie the engine cast date (3-28-66) should be prior to the build date 7-14-66. For more info on this you can go can cross reference all the component numbers found on the radiator, engine, trans, rear end, see pix. with Galen Govier's books that can help you establish if these are the correct parts for that model/year. (The set of Galens books also come with the car).In addition to this, I spoke with the second owner who obtained the car circa 1980 and he confirmed this car has all original engine and drive train. I will provide the winning bidder with contact information to both 2nd and 3rd owners of this car.

Here's a link to a brief video to give you an idea of the car running. I happened to get caught in a brief shower when i was out, the only time I have exposed this car to rain. If you listen carefully I let off when going into second as it's pretty easy to get this car sideways. Remember, the car is completely stock except for the Pertronix ignitor that replaces the points.
