This 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass SupremeConvertible is a rare U Code, 455/T400car. It spent most of its life in Floridaand Scottsdale Arizona from 1985 to 2018.If you like Oldsmobiles you know big block 1970-1972 Cutlass & 442convertibles are rare. They built 2933 442 convertibles in 1970, 1304 in 1971,and 1171 in 1972. They built 693 1970Supreme SX big block convertibles in 1970, and only 357 in 1971. In 1972 theOlds 442 was no longer a separate series with its own specific VIN sequence toidentify 442’s vs. Cutlasses. However in1972, there were letter codes in the VIN to identify drivetrains (H, J, K, Mfor 350 cars, U for 455 automatic cars, V for 455 4 speed cars, and X forW-30’s – from J. Siedlik, 2015, Oldsmobile 1964 thru 1972 A Bodies. You canalso do an internet search for 1972 Oldsmobile VIN codes and find thisinformation.

This car was originally PinehurstGreen. the car was stripped, blocked down to mostly primer then painted blue. No, it is not a stock color, but it should have been.

Options, options options! The options on this Oldsmobile include Power Windows, Hurst Olds His- Hers race shifter, Power Steering, Power Front Disc Brakes, Power Convertible Top, Dual Matching Sport Mirrors, Cut-out back bumper, Front and Rear Sway bars, Tinted Glass, Bucket Seats, Console, Super Stock II Wheels, Sport Steering Wheel, Tilt steering, Tic-Toc-Tac, and working factory Air Conditioning. The car has it’s original floor pans and truck pan. This convertible has front and rear sway bars and there is a 10-bolt posi traction rear-end, with a 3.5 ratio.

This car has a genuine GM ram-air hood (fiberglass upper and steel under) with the factory screen underneath. The functioning ram-air air cleaner is also included although it does not fit under the hood currently due to the high rise edelbrock manifold. It could be modified to fit or you can put back the original intake manifold which is included. The ram air still works with the conventional air cleaner in the picture. I also have the proper whale tail but never mounted it. It is actually not correct for a 72 and found that out after I bought the tail.

Since I have owned the car (25 years) I have gone through everything ($29000+ in receipts in a folder for you).Theengine was built from the crank up by a well known shop in Phoenix and added Edelbrock aluminum heads, headers, and manifold (kept originalheads and manifold stored) also 2.5 aluminizedexhaust. Engine has 6,000 miles on it since the rebuild. It runs great and has a great rumble. Nice but not to loudfor my Wife. All lights, wipers, andturn signals work. Power windows andpower top work great, factory AC works with proper R12 gas.

The body and chassis on this car are very clean, and the framewas removed and powder coated in 2017. This ofcourse means that all of the suspension bushings and body mount cushions are new and properly aligned makingit ride like brand new.

There is no bonded over ruston the car. Any minor rust had metal welded in 20 years ago. Car has correct Super Stock II (an option) wheelswith bolt on chrome caps. Tires areabout 4 years old with 95% tread.

Interior needs fundamentally nothing other than tightening downsome plastic chrome strips that come loose from heat (it is always something) Vinyl was redone 8 yearsago and looks like new. All new weather stripping was done when we did the frameoff to powder coat the chassis. Dash is original without cracks.

I do have the wheel well moldings but choose not to put them on.

The body pan is in normal road condition. It is solid butnot restored to be shown with mirrors under the car. It is mostly notundercoated with some minor undercoating spray from somewhere back in time. Remember, the frame is PERFECT and never had a stitch of rust.

Info on pricing and the general market:

Several 1972 Olds 442 convertibles cloned into 455 cars (VINcodes show they started as 350 cars) recently sold on Ebay for $36K and $39K+ (bythe Wisconsin guy). Also see sold Black Ram Air U Code Supreme Sold$44.9K. Matching numbers, Nice restoredcar.

The convertible top was replaced several yearsago, and is in very good condition with no rips or tears and features theglass back window option. All the padding and the well liner were replaced atthat time. The top goes up and down very nicely through the switch on the dash. The doors still open and close like back in 1972. There are a very comfortablepair of bucket seats in very good condition with a nice console his/hers shifter. Theentire interior is in nice condition. There is also a full set of seat belts present for a family of five. All weather strip around doors and windows have been replaced. They all look new.

According to theOldsFaqs website only 1,025 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models weremade with an automatic transmission in 1972. They said whether this model is areal 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like areal 442 if it is converted properly. If it were a real W-30 it would have an Xin the vehicle identification number. The red fender wells that were notoriouson the 70 and 71 W-30 models were only red on the very first 10 1972 W-30\'sthat rolled off the assembly line in December of 1971. This car is not a W-30 although I do have the emblems if you are inclined to put them on.

I\'ll give a littlebackground on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and 442 models.Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442\'sstarted out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car wasordered from the dealership as a true 442. This is easily verified by theOldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as aseparate model up until 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an orderedoption starting in 1972.

The OldsFaqswebsite made the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972.All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442, ordealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they areall considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies.

The Nada ClassicCar Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible with theRocket 455 and air conditioning listed at $78,000 in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or anoriginal vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not representa 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higherprices.

They have theaverage condition listed as $52,520, which they consider in good overallcondition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained originalvehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanicsare presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average conditioncar is considered a 20-Footer!

Nada has thelowest condition value at $33,540 being considered a deteriorated restorationor a very poor restoration, but mostly usable \"As-Is!\" The lowestvalue does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price fora car needing a complete restoration.

Thingsit could use: The engine compartment can use further detailing and the black area at the bottom of the dash as well as the convertible frame could use fresh paint.

Other notes: Trumpet exhaust tips have been ordered and will be added. They just have not arrived yet. Notice that the rear trunk molding is not on the deck lid. I have it but I plan to delete the 2 corner pieces of chrome instead. I see it as cleaner. I also have the originalcruisecontrolsystem but it is not on the car. It\'s big and clunky so it sits in a box.

I tried to list everything I know about the car when writing this description. If you feel I may have left anything out please ask as many questions as you like. Send and and I can send you my phone number.

Thanks,

Chris
